The Scarsdale Police Department received a complaint from a local resident who said that on Friday, Feb. 5 she was contacted by alleged federal agents who informed her of fraudulent activity that took place recently in her name, was “serious in nature” and required her to secure her assets.
According to police, the woman was instructed to withdraw $5,000 from her bank to buy gift cards to submit to them for safekeeping. A second phone call followed the initial call that showed the Scarsdale Police contact number on her caller ID.
It is alleged that the scammers proceeded to pose as a Scarsdale police officer, who verified that the incident with the federal officials was legitimate and to comply with their request for the gift cards.
The woman proceeded to purchase multiple gift cards totaling $5,000, which she then offered the gift card numbers to the scammers to collect the funds. The Scarsdale Police Department is investigating the fraud scheme, though no suspects have been identified.
